Fall Safety Driving Tips

Fall is a great time for picking pumpkins and hayrides. But it’s also a time when you need to look out for road and weather conditions.

This season, make sure you stay safe on the road with some smart driving tips.

Exercise caution when braking on leaves. Wet leaves can make road surfaces as slippery as ice. Always drive slowly over leaves and avoid any hard braking. Leaves may make lane lines and other road markers hard to see, so be sure to pay attention to the edges of the road and be sure to stay in your lane.

Sun glare can impair your vision.  The first 15 to 45 minutes before sunset and after sunrise and can make seeing the road difficult. The sun aligns perfectly with east/west roadways during this time of the year. Select a good pair of sunglasses and keep your windshield clean.

Be smart in the rain. In many areas, rainfall increases in the Fall. Be sure to maintain a safe distance from the car in front of you when it’s raining, as the risk of slipping and hydroplaning rises. Always use your fog lights or low beams in fog conditions.

Exercise caution on bridges. Morning frost can leave icy patches on bridges, overpasses, and shaded spots on the road. Slow down.

Let your eyes adjust. After the autumnal equinox according to the National Weather Service, we lose 1 to 2 minutes of daylight daily. After leaving your home or the office give your eyes time to adjust to the dark before hitting the gas pedal. It takes between 2 and 5 minutes for your eyes to start adjusting

Deer crossing awareness. Deer breeding season starts in Autumn and they are more active in near-road areas. Deer increases during sunrise sand sunset so close attention when driving near wooded areas and signs for deer crossing.

Is your Porsche up to the task? Be sure to:

  • Check to see if your windshield wipers need replacement. Glare can be reduced with a clean windshield
  • Check your tire pressure regularly. For every 10-degree temperature drop, tires lose 1 to 2 pounds of pressure
  • Align and Adjust your headlights. Properly aligned headlights give you the best view of the road.
